It is my desire that after our time together you will:

  • Look at art around you in a new way.
  • Have a better understanding of all 7 elements of design.
  • Awaken that creative spark!
  • Feel confident to take more art classes.
  • Enjoy the exercises so much that you fill your sketch book in your free time.

“I feel like this art course by Marlene is such a great and gentle way to get creative. I loved the exercises and my 8 yr old loved joining in with me on a few too!”

This workshop is a good fit if this sounds like you:

  • I have a full schedule, not much free time, but I want more creativity in my life.
  • I made art in the past but I’m not sure how to restart.
  • I have children or grandchildren and I’m looking for art activities to do with them that I find interesting too!
  • I’m a beginner.
  • I have an art practice but I’m looking for a refresher.

This experience is not a good fit if you desire to have a completed piece at the end because we are going to use the time together to experiment and try out different techniques. While I’m primarily an abstract artist, this workshop is open to those who prefer to work in realism too because the same principles apply and how you paint is as important as what you paint.

Questions?

How much time do I have to complete the course?

The course is hosted on a platform called Teachable. I have committed to be present on that site for until the end of February 2027).

What will we be doing together?
I’ve developed a series of fun exercises so that we can explore the 7 elements of design (colour, line, direction, value, texture, shape & size). These sessions are a catalyst for starting or reigniting creativity in your life.

What do we need for art supplies?
Once you register, you’ll be able to access the list of supplies like a mixed media sketchbook, some acrylic paints and a few other items, many of which you will already have around your home.

How much time does this take?
I’ve designed each video to be about 1/2 hour and you can either follow along or watch the video and then do the exercises. I would put aside about 2 hours for each of the 4 lessons. You can complete everything over a weekend or pace yourself over several months. I also offer bonus exercises if you are keen to explore more.

Did I miss anything?
Reach out if you have any questions. Looking forward to creating together.

You’ll come away with tons of very applicable concepts and your creativity will likely be reinvigorated.”

In the meantime, here’s a short video on the basics of colour mixing.

Marlene Lowden primarily works in oil and creates large expressive paintings on canvas.  After several years in television broadcasting, she resumed her lifelong interest in painting, drawing, and photography. She draws from her experience in television and video production, applying to canvas similar principles of composition and storytelling. Marlene is a proud alumni of Thrive Art Studios, an international collective of female artists. For over 2 years, she exhibited an homage series of 32 works to Canadian female artists called “Blind Contour Homage.”  The exhibition travelled to 7 public galleries in British Columbia. In 2021 she was named one of “28 contemporary Canadian artists to know” by Create! Magazine. She is honoured to be included in the All She Makes curated artist directory, the 4th Edition of their magazine and in Art Seen Magazine based in the U.K. Recently Saatchi Art selected her as 1 of 24 artists to collect in 2024. “Something inexpressible” 24″ x 24″ oil on canvas by Marlene Lowden

Over the years, I have taken numerous art workshops, never have I had an instructor share so much of herself, her vast knowledge and her creative expression. She has a kind nature and a wonderful, welcoming personality. She is articulate and shares her love of life and  encouraged us to dive deep into our work. Her class started simply, including the use of tools and painting basics. I was able to follow eagerly and learned many valuable painting techniques.  The supply list was limited and functional. The time Marlene allotted to the processes was well regarded. I had ample time to reflect and practice the many challenges to becoming a more successful artist.I would highly recommend Marlene’s class to every painter. I thank her for showing me the rewarding life that painting , and all that goes with, has to offer.” Patricia
