What I’m learning from this painting: patience, th What I’m learning from this painting:
patience, the courage to be comfortable with tension and the ability to allow softness and strength to coexist. Phew!

Not sure if I’m done but I’ll let it sit for a while.

The equinox is a few days away, and while the rest The equinox is a few days away, and while the rest of the world is spring cleaning, I’m busy nesting. 🪺 My version involves piles of hand-made Yupo stencils, these shapes have been my constants since 2020—shifting, layering, and taking up space alongside me. 💥

Up close, you can see my unlearning; the layers, d Up close, you can see my unlearning; the layers, drips, and scribbles. My work is not the voice of a ‘polite’ Canadian girl.

I’m trading neatness for raw beauty to speak up for the generations of women in my family who couldn’t. The story isn’t in perfection—it’s in liberation. 💥

She’s my grandmother. I never met her; she passed She’s my grandmother. I never met her; she passed away before my Dad even graduated high school.

She was an artist. Dad said she told the best bedtime stories and acted in plays at the local Women’s Auxiliary. There were even whispers of a Hollywood scout coming to town for her.

But homesteading in a rural seaside community in the 1920s didn’t leave much room for a creative life. Between raising two girls and the economic weight of the Great Depression, her art was set aside. Eventually, my Grandfather left for war a second time. When he returned, my Dad was born—a “miracle baby” for a 40-year-old woman at the time!

I paint for her.
Marian Elizabeth Lowden.

In my work, the scribbles are frustration and defiance. The drips are freedom. The bold colours say: Look at me. Look at us. See us.

The organic shapes celebrate our shared home; the forest and ocean remind me of her strength. She is part of a long line of women—grandmothers, aunties, and cousins—who are my foundation. Like the nature surrounding me, they are the quiet power holding me up.

I can’t imagine being silenced, unable to express myself through paint. My grandmother didn’t have the opportunity to create, but she is the guardian angel reminding me why it’s so important that I do.

I paint for myself, for her, for the countless like her and for my children.

Feeling immensely grateful this International Women’s Day for my creative life and all the women I share it with.

🌊 I was raised by the ocean. Salt water in my vein 🌊 I was raised by the ocean. Salt water in my veins. These shapes and lines feel like home and naturally pour out of me.

I’m an artist and also an art collector. The work I choose to hang in my home is as varied as my lived experiences.

What influences your aesthetic? Colour, shape, your environment, memories, travel?

Bowie said something along these lines - most arti Bowie said something along these lines - most artists feel a lot happier discussing the process of what they do rather than what it all means… so many painters who title their works after they’ve done them, which is a real giveaway…

This made my shoulder drop a little because I’m so process driven when I paint. I often don’t know what it all means until I’m several paintings into something new. Like all these lines. Besides being a reflection of the lines I see in the forest and on the shore, why am I compelled to bring them into the work right now?

What I do know is that at the core, my work is about being seen. I make messy, graffiti-like pieces that are trying to get your attention. They are bold and outspoken because I’m doing my very best to speak for all the Grandmothers and Aunties in my life and probably yours too who couldn’t express their creativity. Only a few decades ago, my mother couldn’t even wear pants to work in my community. Can you imagine what else had to be repressed?

Why do I use the shapes and lines of the forest and ocean from my home to express these ideas? Because nature is resilient and powerful. It is our support, like so many of the women who have come before me. 🙏

Mud pies. When I was little, I loved creating mud Mud pies. When I was little, I loved creating mud pies. The best part was decorating them. I chose petals, grass, leaves, moss, stones and shells from the beach nearby. At a very early age, nature’s perfect imperfection is what defined my version of beauty. 💚
