Large canvases allow me to be involved with a painting in a very physical way.
Some painters find a large white canvas to be very intimidating but I love working big. I understand why large scale work was one of the only commonalities that the mid century abstract expressionists shared. Large spaces allow the painter to use their whole arm span and body while working. It is conducive to self expression, much like dance or other performance arts which is why the style of painting was often called action painting.
