Green reminds me of home.

I was raised on the West Coast of Canada and live here still. Whenever I have the great fortune to travel, upon returning, I’m struck by the wealth and richness of my green surroundings.

I am very comfortable painting with green. It feels lush, calm and has depth. The variations are endless creating parts of a painting that feel vibrant and lively and others that reflect a more melancholy thoughtful mood.

Green is a balancing colour, in the middle of the visible spectrum. The higher three colours are known as the “cool” colours and are calming in effect, the lower three are known as the “warm” colours and have a stimulating effect.  Green is a secondary colour because it is a mixture of two primary colours, blue and yellow. Mixing yellow with green will make it warmer and blue cooler, hence it has balancing qualities.

With this special place in the middle of the spectrum, green is the colour of balance and harmony and can, therefore, be helpful in times of stress. It can create a very relaxing environment.  It relates to the HEART (anahata) chakra, which is the middle chakra and represents love.

Green is the complementary colour of red. If you look closely at any of my predominately green works, you will see some red. I especially like to use the deep orange red that looks like cedar bark because I’m surrounded by a lush temperate rainforest and spend much of my time hiking in the trails around my home.
